Economics is the study of how individuals, firms, government, and society allocate scarce resources.
Students who study economics enjoy a broad liberal arts education, while also developing the analytical tools to be successful in the job market and/or gain entry to graduate school. Economists develop theoretical and statistical models to analyze and forecast variables in the economy. The models force a level of precision and analytical rigor that can assist households, businesses, governments, and other organizations in making efficient decisions. Specific duties of an individual employed as an economist include:
- Collect, analyze, and present data
- Develop surveys and sampling techniques
- Monitor economic trends
- Write economic articles for media outlets
- Prepare research reports
- Develop models and forecasts of numerous variables
- Conduct cost and pricing analyses
- Conduct benefit-cost analyses
