Department of English

The English Department has 25 full-time faculty with doctorates from schools such as the University of Chicago, UNC Chapel Hill, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas (Austin). More than 200 majors pursue their interests in American, British and world literatures, as well as professional and creative writing. We also have a robust internship program with placements throughout the Tidewater area and the state of Virginia that connect our students to the workplace and provide opportunity for real-world experience and training. Our graduates go on to law school, graduate school and careers in publishing, public relations, teaching, government service and nonprofit work — just to name a few. Because success in the global world requires strong critical thinking and writing skills, a degree in English emphasizes the solid, transferable communication skills that are attractive to potential employers. Even more than these positive advantages of a degree in English, as Mark Edmundson, Professor of English at the University of Virginia, wrote in his 2013 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education: “All students — and I mean all — ought to think seriously about majoring in English. Becoming an English major means pursuing the most important subject of all — being a human being.”
