Scholarships

The English Department proudly offers the following scholarships to deserving students:

The Albert E. Millar Jr. Scholarship honors the life and career of Dr. Al Millar, who taught at Christopher Newport from 1965-2001. This scholarship is funded by donations from the Millar family, students, colleagues and friends. It is given to English majors who demonstrate a desire to study literature.

Application Criteria and Instructions

  • Must be a rising or current senior English major with interest in literary studies
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

Applicants must submit the following materials electronically or in person to Vickie Garton-Gundling, office manager, at victoria.gartongundling@cnu.edu or in McMurran 205:

  • Cover sheet
  • A cover letter that explains the applicant’s qualifications for the award; must include information about current studies and future plans specific to the award.
  • A writing sample of no more than 1,500 words. This can be an excerpt from a longer text, including a paper from a previous English course.

The Teresa Van Dover Scholarship is given in memory of Terry Van Dover, an English major enrolled during the 1980s. After her death, her husband solicited contributions from Terry's former employers, as well as friends and family, in order to establish the award, the criteria for which reflect Terry's interests and circumstances.

Application Criteria and Instructions

  • Must be a rising or current junior or senior English major
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must demonstrate academic achievement and financial need, with priority given to academic achievement

Applicants must submit the following materials electronically or in person to Vickie Garton-Gundling, office manager, at victoria.gartongundling@cnu.edu or in McMurran 205:

  • Cover sheet
  • A cover letter that identifies the applicant’s financial need and academic progress at CNU relevant to this award.
  • A writing sample of no more than 1,500 words. This can be an excerpt from a longer text, including a paper from a previous English course.

The Nancy Gonzales Turner Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in English who exhibits outstanding academic achievement.

Application Criteria and Instructions

  • Must be a declared English major, full-time or part-time, any year
  • Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

Applicants must submit the following materials electronically or in person to Vickie Garton-Gundling, office manager, at victoria.gartongundling@cnu.edu or in McMurran 205:

  • Cover sheet
  • A cover letter that addresses the applicant’s academic achievements relevant to this award.
  • A writing sample of no more than 1,500 words. This can be an excerpt from a longer text, including a paper from a previous English course.

The Dr. Joyce K. Sancetta Book Award honors Sancetta’s 10-year service to the English Department. Sancetta funded this book award to assist an English major in developing a library for their personal and/or professional use. Eligible students can submit a list of proposed books and an essay explaining how the specified books advance the student’s interests and goals.

Application Criteria and Instructions

  • Must be a rising or current junior or senior English major

Applicants must submit the following materials electronically or in person to Vickie Garton-Gundling, office manager, at victoria.gartongundling@cnu.edu or in McMurran 205:

  • Cover sheet
  • A list of books totaling the approximate amount of the award
  • An essay of no more than 500 words that describes how the books will facilitate pursuit of applicant’s personal and/or professional interests

The W.D. Wolf Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Wolf’s service to the English Department from 1976 to 1982.

Application Criteria and Instructions

  • Must be an English major
  • Must be a junior, senior or a graduate student in the master of arts in teaching program
