Department of Military Science

The curriculum in military science offers credits that can be applied toward an undergraduate degree. Courses in military science also serve as the cornerstone of the United States Army’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), the fundamental training program for the nation’s future military officers.

Christopher Newport University has a long, proud tradition of training future military and civilian leaders. This rich history is recorded in the name of our ROTC unit, “The Revolutionary Guard Battalion.”

The Military Science Department offers courses for all students without requiring a commitment to future military service. Students who enroll in 100-level and 200-level courses, for example, study leadership, management, and the interactive dynamics of building teams. Students with previous military service or who have completed courses in another ROTC program may be granted placement credit for the freshman and sophomore classes.

Studies in the program are rigorous. On completing the two- or four-year program requirements, students attain a commission in the United States Army in active duty, reserve and/or National Guard service. Please visit our scholarships page to learn how participating in ROTC can reduce the costs of earning a degree from Christopher Newport University.
