Student Government Association - Student Government Association - Christopher Newport University

Student Government Association

Student Government Association (SGA) aims to provide a voice for all students in the Christopher Newport community. The goal of SGA is to listen to the interests and needs of students and promote these to the administration to affect positive change on campus.

SGA was launched in 2020. Since then, SGA has worked to:

  • develop a working set of by-laws
  • establish itself with students, faculty and administrators
  • gain true student voice on campus

SGA has worked with the administration to give true student voice to student fees allocation, and now allocates small grants and conference funds as well as front-end budgets.

SGA fights for student voice through its committees and efforts to gauge student-body opinion on a daily basis.

If you ever have a concern about your college experience, please email us at sga@cnu.edu or contact any delegate or executive board member.

Committees

The Academic Affairs Committee seeks to address academic policy concerns to the student body. The committee recommends suggestions to the assembly to take to administration.

Current Projects

  • Creative Classes

The purpose of the Appropriations Committee is to:

  • Vet requests for any allocations to be given by the Student Government Association that include, but are not limited to, awards and monies under control of the Student Government Association. All monies should comply with the “Policies of Monetary Allocations” section
  • Vet requests for small grants, conference funds and front-end-budgeted organizations, in conjunction with the Office of Student Activities.

For more information, contact Vice President of Finance Neyshmarie Rosario-Cabrera at neyshmarie.rosariocabrera.17@cnu.edu.

Current Initiatives:

  • Small Grant Fund: The Small Grant Fund, provided by a portion of the student activity fees, is available to recognized student organizations in support of events, activities and student-led programs/initiatives that contribute to the quality of campus life at CNU.
  • Conference Fund: SGA is committed to helping students be successful in their personal, academic and professional endeavors. One way this support is demonstrated is through financial assistance for individual students who want to enhance their educational experience by attending leadership, academic and professional conferences.
