Captains Card

Your Captains Card is your Christopher Newport ID card.

You use it to access your residence hall, meal plan, Dining Dollars, Captains Cash and Print Funds account. You can also use it to check out game room equipment or student club office keys in the David Student Union. Take it with you to participate in intramural sports, check out books from the library and to get a student discount on tickets at the Ferguson Center.

Care for Your Captains Card

Do not:

  • Punch holes in the card.
  • Place tape over the magnetic stripe.
  • Place card on stereo equipment, computers or near any magnetic field, including next to a credit card.
  • Leave it in direct sunlight or expose to extreme heat.
  • Machine wash or place it in clothes dryer.
  • Use it as a scraping tool.
  • Crimp, bend, twist or relaminate card.

How do I get one?

  • Freshmen receive their Captains Card on move-in day in August.
  • Transfer students receive their Captains Card during Changing Tides orientation.
  • If you did not attend Setting Sail or Changing Tides, please bring a valid photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, military ID or passport, AND a class schedule or admission letter to the David Student Union (DSU) Welcome Desk).
  • For your Captains Card photo, you must have a straight face or simple smile. Head coverings and/or sunglasses are not permitted.

If you lose your Captains Card, report it lost or stolen immediately. Here's how:

  • Log in to CNU Connect.
  • At the top of the page, in the gold bar, click Captains Card.
  • In the upper left-hand corner, click Card Services.
  • Select the Captains Card to deactivate.
  • Click Deactivate Captains Card.

This will freeze your Captains Card account so it can not be used. If your card is recovered, please go to the DSU Welcome Desk or the Captains Card Office (DSU 380) to have it reactivated. Note: we can only reactivate a current card. If you had a previous Captains Card that was lost or stolen, we cannot reactivate that card. Also, we cannot reactivate your account over the telephone or through email. It can only be done in person at the DSU Welcome Desk.

Lost or damaged cards will be replaced at the DSU Welcome Desk:

  • Please bring a valid photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, military ID or passport).
  • Students must pay for a replacement card. The fee schedule is as follows:
    • Resident: turns in old card - $15; does not turn in old card - $25
    • Non-resident: turns in old card - $5; does not turn in old card - $15
  • If your Captains Card is stolen, there is no replacement cost if you have a copy of a police report or case number.

What is Captains Cash?

Captains Cash is money deposited by the cardholder to be used campus-wide and at participating off-campus merchants. Captains Cash also acts as a "back-up funding source" should you run out of Dinning Dollars or Print Funds.

What are Dining Dollars?

Dining Dollars are a part of your meal plan. Dining Dollars can only be used at on-campus dining halls and restaurants.

Places to use your Dining Dollars:

  • Concessions
  • Discovery Bistro
  • Discovery Cafe (Chick-fil-A and Grille)
  • Discovery Pizza
  • Einstein's Cafe
  • Regattas
  • The Commons

Dining Dollars Deposit Policy

  • Each student who is signed up for a meal plan will receive a $50 deposit the day before classes begin.
  • Any student who adds a meal plan during the first week of classes will also receive $50 initially.
  • Then, seven days after classes begin, students will receive an adjustment (if applicable) to their Dining Dollars account.
  • The last day to use Dining Dollars is the last day of exams, each semester.

What are Print Funds?

Students receive $20 in Print Funds at the beginning of each semester. The last day to use Print Funds is the last day of exams, each semester.

Summer students receive $5 per class. These funds remain valid only during the term period of that specific class.

Places to use Print Funds:

  • Printers and/or copiers located in the Trible Library
  • Printers and/or copiers located in the David Student Union, Forbes Hall, Luter Hall, McMurran Hall and Ratcliffe Hall
  • All printers print in color, copy, copy in color and scan to email

Where Can I Use My Captains Card?

Participating off-campus vendors may stop accepting the Captains Card as payment without prior notice and may, at times, experience technical difficulties with their systems. Always make sure a vendor's system is functioning properly prior to ordering. Please email us at captainscard@cnu.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
