Initial appointment times are generally scheduled Monday through Friday, with the first session hour being scheduled at 9 a.m.. We do not typically schedule sessions during the lunch hour (Noon-1 p.m.). In general, students can be seen for their initial appointment within a couple of business days.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening or medical emergency that requires immediate medical attention, do not contact OCS. Instead call 911 or contact University Police at (757) 594-7777.
If you experience a mental health emergency during normal business hours, you may visit or call our office to see or speak with a therapist.
If you are scheduling an appointment as part of the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS) sanctions, please let the front desk staff know so proper paperwork can be completed.
At the end of the initial appointment, the therapist and student will determine what type of services will best help you resolve your concerns. OCS offers a variety of services, including individual counseling, group counseling or both. We use a student-focus on brief treatment model, which typically means that the student’s concerns can be resolved within the course of the semester.
Please note that the therapist you meet with for your initial appointment may or may not become your regular therapist. If brief treatment does not meet your needs, or if you prefer an off-campus therapist, you may be referred to other community providers.
