Energy use on campus is tracked through our utility bills. Dominion Energy provides electricity for Christopher Newport and is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Virginia Natural Gas provides natural gas and is measured in hundred cubic feet (HCF).

Site Energy Use Intensity (EUI) is a measure of the total energy consumption of a location as a function of its size and other characteristics. It is measured in energy per square foot per year (kBtu/ft2). EUI is used to help measure energy efficiency and benchmark operational performance.

Part of our environmental impact is measured through greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gasses include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorocarbon gasses that are by-products of combustion, industrial production and land use. Greenhouse gasses are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) which takes into account all these gasses.
