We are here to help provide you with meaningful experiential learning opportunities that complement your academic endeavors, engage you in leadership outside the classroom and empower you to serve in the community.
Our university fellows work directly with you in:
- Connecting you to campus resources
- Helping define your personal goals
- Exploring opportunities to become engaged members of the CNU community
Our office, in collaboration with other student services, works to facilitate the exchange of ideas, promote campus traditions and shape the Christopher Newport experience.
What We Do
The purpose behind an engagement meeting is to gain an understanding of what a student wants to accomplish and how they want to spend their time while at CNU. In addition, this is a chance to address any concerns or feelings of confusion on how to get involved. Together with a university fellow, students will be able to set goals, formulate a plan to take that first step and connect with the appropriate resources to make it happen. These meetings are a resource to students that they can take advantage of as frequently has desired.
How they work:
- Student engagement fellows conduct the engagement meetings. Any student can sign up to have a meeting. They will last approximately 45 minutes, giving students time to make it to their next class.
- Before your arrival, please fill out the sign-up form and bring it with you to your first meeting.
- You will walk away from your first meeting with an engagement plan and opportunity for follow up meeting later in the semester.
How to sign up:
- Go to the student engagement calendar. There you will find appointment times based on the availability of university fellows. The calendar will compare your own Google calendar against the appointment options. Schedule a meeting by clicking on the time and saving the appointment.
Speak CNU is an event where students can present ideas, experiences and research to campus in a unique and professional way. It is just like Ted Talks where speeches are short and to the point. This is an incredible opportunity to present an idea that has been burning on your heart to share. It is a place to speak freely and openly. It is a way for the campus to come together as one body and participate in ongoing dialogues
- Date: Thursday, November 1, 2018

Transfer Ambassadors
As new students make the decision to transfer to Christopher Newport, transfer ambassadors will have the exciting opportunity to serve as their guide through Changing Tides, Welcome Week and their first year. Transfer ambassadors are liaisons between transfer students and campus resources, engagement opportunities and more.
These ambassadors will receive training to serve in an orientation role during Welcome Week, but they will also work with transfer students throughout the year.
Interested in being a transfer ambassador? Check back in April for additional information regarding the position and application process.

Service Opportunities
JumpStarters are service experiences around the Newport News community that serve as an introduction to the different service tracks available in the Center of Community Engagement.
For these experiences, logistics (including coordination with the service site and transportation) have been arranged. The goal is to introduce you to service opportunities in Newport News so you may find one in particular to continue to work with during your time at Christopher Newport.
The goal of international service experiences is to support the missions of Christopher Newport through cultural immersion and service. By engaging with international populations, students will develop meaningful connections with other people and cultures, as well as a sense of personal responsibility toward becoming global citizens. The international service experiences provide a unique opportunity for students to integrate theory with their experience and personal development.
