Captains Card

About the Captains Card

The Captains Card is the University’s official ID card, an essential part of campus life.

It is used for entering residence halls and rooms, accessing meal plans and Dining Dollars, picking up packages from the Student Mailroom, printing via the Print Anywhere system and using Captains Cash. It also serves as the student’s library card. For faculty and staff, the Captains Card is used for door access, Captains Cash and as a library card.

Students who have submitted their photo by Monday, July 31, 2023, will receive their Captains Card as follows:

  • First-year residential students: on move-in day
  • First-year commuter students: during Welcome Week
  • Transfer students: during Changing Tides

Those who do not submit their photo online must visit the Welcome Desk in the David Student Union (DSU) to have a photo taken and will receive their Captains Card at that time.

We recommend logging in to our online management portal with your CNU Connect login and suspending your Captains Card as soon as you realize it is missing.

Visit the Welcome Desk to obtain a replacement Captains Card.

  • $30 for residential students
  • $20 for commuter students

About Captains Cash

Captains Cash is an account into which you, your family or friends can deposit money. It is used for purchases all over campus, as well as at participating businesses near campus. Captains Cash carries over each semester you are enrolled in classes.

Captains Cash provides convenience. In the event your Captains Card is lost or stolen, it can be replaced at the Welcome Desk. It also allows use of laundry machines without locating quarters. Additionally, Captains Cash provides a 10% discount in Dining Services.

Deposits may be made to a cardholder's Captains Cash account four different ways:

  • Captains Cash Kiosk (cash or credit card) - Must have your Captains Card and credit card, if using one, with you. Kiosks are located directly beside the ATM in the David Student Union and the 24/7 lab in the Trible Library.

  • Online (credit card) - Deposits can be made via our online portal. There is a $2.50 convenience fee for each online deposit.

  • In person (cash or check)
    • Go to the Cashiers' Office on the 1st floor of Christopher Newport Hall, and tell them you want to make a deposit on your Captains Card.
    • Once the money is received by the Cashiers' Office, it can take up to 24 hours before it is available in your account.
  • By mail (cash or check) - We recommend all deposits be accompanied by a Captains Cash Deposit Mail In Form to ensure the money is accurately credited to your Captains Cash account.
