James River Theme Units

Theme Units

Theme-unit housing is available for students who share common interests and whose stated goals and objectives can be enhanced through a shared living environment.

Three theme units are located in James River Hall and can accommodate both male and female participants as a single gender or coed unit. Separate bathroom facilities are designated for males and females. Each unit is designed to accommodate 14 residents and one resident assistant. Theme units remain part of the larger residence hall community and are bound by the same rules and regulations.

Priority consideration will be given to groups of students in good standing with a history of success and positive contributions to the Christopher Newport University community. Student academic success and past behavior may be taken into consideration when making roster selections for the theme units. Letters from faculty/staff/advisers in support of the group are encouraged but not required.

To be considered for theme unit housing, the group/organization must identify a theme on which the community will be based. Examples include: foreign language and culture, cooking, fine arts, theater, music, major of study, leadership, etc. The goal is to provide a residential learning community that allows like-minded individuals to live together linked by common values and interests. Students involved with this community are expected to engage in activities that supplement the educational process through structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote learning and development.
