Housing and Residence Life

Frequently Asked Questions

You can check your classification by logging into the online housing portal.

The classification information is based upon the number of years living on campus. Classificiation for housing purposes is not based on the number of academic credit hours achieved or age.

  • First year residents will be listed as freshmen.
  • Second year residents will be listed as sophomore.
  • Third year residents will be listed as junior.
  • Fourth year residents will be listed as senior.
  • Fifth year residents will be listed as graduate.
  • Transfer student residents will be listed as transfer and should contact the Housing Administration Office to get their classification updated to ensure they receive the right time ticket.

If you missed the deadline, please visit the  online housing portal to complete the contract online. If the online contract process has closed, please submit a Housing and Dining Contract Acceptance form to University Housing Administration.

Contracts submitted after the deadline may limit your participation in housing selection. Students who are unable to participate in housing selection will be placed administratively after the housing selection process is complete based on room availability at that time.

If you have completed the housing contract on time, but did not get a time, email housingadmin@cnu.edu.

If you did not complete the housing contract, see above.

Current sophomores (second-year residents, rising juniors or rising third-years), can reside with other students with the same classification as well as rising seniors, rising fourth-year residents or rising-fifth-year residents. Residence halls for third-,fourth- and fifth-year residents are:

  • James River Hall apartments
  • CNU Apartments: Harrison, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Washington

  • In the online housing portal, select Live on Campus and navigate through the steps to the "Roommate Web Profile," and then select "include in roommate search."
  • Search for your roommate.
  • Once you find them, you can send them a request.
  • They will receive notification of your request and will need to confirm you.

You will not be able to participate in the selection process as an individual.

There are many options to find a roommate:

  • Try using the “Roommate Web Profile” available in the online housing portal.
    • Complete your personal profile, then go to the roommate search tab to see who you match with. You can begin a conversation with your matches or simply just request them.
  • Use the RHA Facebook group to search for a roommate.
  • Use your CNU Class Facebook group to search for a roommate.
  • Attend the RHA Mixer
  • Contact your RA or Residential Fellow

If you do not find a roommate or decide to participate in housing selection as an individual, please contact housingadmin@cnu.edu. You will be placed on the individual student placements list, and you will be placed in the best available room after the housing selection process based on your assigned time ticket.

There are enough rooms on campus for all the students who are required to reside on campus. If there are not any available units in the hall you desire, you may have to select a different hall or adjust your group size.

You should select a room during the selection process. If you wish to be considered to reside in a different building, you can email housingadmin@cnu.edu with details of your group and your desired room or building preferences. You will be added to a waitlist. After the housing selection process, if space becomes available, you may be contacted to update your room assignment. All students who are required to live on campus will receive housing before the fall semester.

Email housingadmin@cnu.edu with your information and they will assist you in finding a location. Send your name and student ID number along with your room preferences. Your group may be added to the group request list and placed if an entire unit becomes available after the housing selection process has concluded. You may be added to the list of individual student requests and placed as soon as we can find an open space to meet your criteria.

Email housingadmin@cnu.edu with your information and, if there is an opportunity to move to a different building after the housing selection process has concluded, we will assist you in finding a location.

There are enough rooms on campus for all students who need to fulfill the residency requirement. While a student may not get their first choice for building or room layout, Housing Administration is able to assist students in finding a room on campus.

Additional rooms around campus will open up throughout the rest of the semester and into the summer. Students will be placed as they become available.

Exemptions from the Residency Requirement are based on each individual student’s ability to meet the criteria and documentation expectations.

All requests for accommodations for continuing students are due prior to time tickets being issued during the housing selection process so student needs can be met through a pre-placement process. After the housing selection process concludes, options will be limited.

If you believe you qualify for housing accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you must request this through the Office of Student Affairs.

Additional information about accommodations can be found by visiting the link below:

In the meantime we suggest you still choose a space on campus and should you qualify for an accommodation and we have another space open, the Housing Administration can reassign your room.

The Office of Student Affairs must approve all emotional support animals as part of the accommodations process.

Submit all documentation to the Office of Student Affairs in the David Student Union 3127, by email dosa@cnu.edu or fax (757) 594–8439.

Once a student has permission to bring their emotional support animal, the Housing Administration Office will assist them with placement based on the recommendations or requirements from Student Affairs. Emotional support animals can be placed in all of our residence halls.

Time tickets are based on the student's classification, the requirement to live on campus and scholarship programs linked to living on campus. Rising third- and fourth-year residents who are required to live on campus as part of the three-year residency requirement or in order to retain a residency-based scholarship will receive earlier time tickets than students who are not required to reside on campus.

Consideration of a room assignment is first prioritized in time ticket order. Students who are required to live on campus will be placed prior to students who are not required to live on campus. Students who have a room but have requested to be moved to a different building will be offered the opportunity to move according to time ticket and the availability within their requested building.

New incoming students receive room assignments after room selection through a manual assignment completed by University Housing.

Students who are not required to live on campus and would like housing for the next academic year may sign the housing contract online. If you are also a current resident during the selection process you may participate. If you are not also a current resident during the selection process, you may not participate in selection and housing administration will assign you a room based on availability and as space permits.

Specific room types or buildings cannot be guaranteed. We have several different styles of housing on campus and will do our best to honor a student's housing preferences when availability allows. All of our apartment-style housing is available for rising third-, fourth- and fifth-year residents during their selection period. All of our apartment units have kitchens.

James River apartments are on a Residence Hall occupancy period and are not eligible for retention. The Room Retention panel contains more detailed retention information and important notes about retention.

Retention eligibility, retainable buildings, and requirements are subject to change.

Students are billed by semester and will only be billed for the semester they reside on campus.

When you return for spring semester, please complete a Housing and Dining Contract Acceptance Form. Once the form has been completed, email housingadmin@cnu.edu with your requested roommate information and housing preferences. Please also have your requested roommate email their roommate request as the requests still need to be mutual. University Housing administration will do our best to accommodate roommate requests when possible, but we cannot guarantee a specific room or roommate.

Switching a room assignment may be possible depending on the timing and whether or not students are waiting on a placement. To check on this as a possibility, please email your request to housingadmin@cnu.edu.

East Campus, Rappahannock, James River theme units and James River apartments all have kitchens within the unit.

Warwick River Hall has two community kitchens on each floor.
